Driftwood's Property Sold to Telecom Tycoon

In case you haven't already heard, telecommunications billionaire Craig McCaw has purchased a very large parcel of land adjacent to the luxurious Bacara Spa and Resort for a figure close to $20 million according to published reports. McCaw is the ex-husband of Santa Barbara News-Press owner Wendy McCaw.  Barney Brantigham of the Independent  writes, "McCaw, a Seattle-area billionaire who made his fortune as a pioneer in the cellular phone industry, recently bought a Montecito estate and, according to reports, plans to move here at least part time.  Realtor Kerry Moorman, who reported the sale on his website, declined to identify the buyer, citing confidentiality reasons, when I talked to him Monday. But the buyer of what’s been dubbed The Santa Barbara Cove, Gaviota Holdings, LLC, lists as its mailing address a post office box in Kirkland, WA, where McCaw has his offices."  To read more about this story that will likely impact the local surfing community, click here

All's Quiet on the Local Surf Scene

As reported a couple of weeks ago on the blog, local sea temperatures at the beginning of July had climbed as high as 71.5° farenheit.  Over the past 2 weeks the temps have cooled substantially, falling as low as 58° just a few days ago (7/12).  Since then, the sea temp has rebounded a bit.  The most recent reading was 62°.  Most interesting is the sea surface temperature anomoly (SST) that we have been following for the past few months. The large band of much warmer than normal water has been moving across the Eastern Pacific from Washington and Oregon Southward, and looks like it will come into the Southern California Bight shortly. See:
NOAA El Niño/SST Info.  As far as the surf goes, there is really nothing to report, but an extended period of flatness...
