"Carpinteria High School student Cole Robbins added to his summer conquests by reaching the ultra-competitive finals of the U.S. Open of Longboarding at Huntington Beach last weekend.
Robbins, 16, finished third after besting several elite surfers, including Hawaiian pro Noah Shimabukuro and former U.S. Open champion Brendan White in his first heat and three-time U.S. Open champion Josh Baxter in the quarterfinals.
In his semifinal heat, Robbins finished second to another former U.S. Open champion, Taylor Jensen.
In front of thousands of spectators in the final round, Robbins took an early lead with a score of 7.50 surfing with a combination of noseriding and progressive surfing. But local favorite and three-time world champion Colin McPhillips took the high score of the day with an 18.0, with Jensen edging out Robbins for second place, 15.53 to 14.17.
Hawaiian pro Kai Salas finished fourth among the finalists with 12.77.
The longboarding competition was part of the 2007 Honda Men's U.S. Open of Surfing, billed as North America's highest-rated qualifying event and the world's largest professional surf competition.
Cole's twin brother Brett also competed in the longboard competition, making a strong run to the quarterfinals after finishing second in the previous round of 32 to former Australian Champion Harley Ingleby.
Last month, Cole Robbins won first place in the high school longboard division at the National Scholastic Surfing Association national championships at Lower Trestles in San Clemente, helping Carpinteria High to a fifth-place finish in the high school team competition."
