Night Surfing At Rincon
Rincon surfer Owen Scheid sent in these pictures of himself tearing up the point. As seen in this picture, more and more surfers are turning towards riding Rincon at night ~ an effective way to beat the crowds and catch usually perfect conditions. It's almost always glassy after the sun goes down. Some nights there are as many as 15-20 surfers out in the lineup. Some wear strobe lights to help others see and avoid them, some wear glow sticks, and others just go out without anything. It can get pretty crazy...especially when the surf is setty or pumping. The surfer charging down the line usually can't see the guy(s) stuck inside, and near-miss collisions occur frequently. The coolest time to surf Rincon at night is when the water lights up with bioluminesence. Night surfing also opens up a whole set of new opportunities for surf photography.
Here's another cool shot of Owen slashing the face of a Rincon wall in the late afternoon. Is there any better feeling (except for maybe sex)??
Let's just hope that this next Fall and Winter Mother Nature provides us with some consistent juicy surf. As previously reported, the predominant weather patterns that were responsible for the weak showing last season have shifted dramatically. While there is no guarantee that 2007/2008 will be an epic season at the point, the conditions are sure looking ripe for it.
Whether you ride a longboard or a shortboard, whether you surf up top at Indicator, over at The Rivermouth, or down in The Cove, one thing's for sure: extended periods of STOKE are only a couple of months away...
I'll be shooting pics regularly, so keep an eye out. You'll be able to find yourself at Rincon Surf Blog.
This last shot is just plain radical! Thanks for contributing Owen...

Lastly, a YouTube Video Clip from the 2006 Rincon Classic to wet your appetites.
