Mickey Muñoz' Birthday, Local Surfers Head to Tahiti to Brave Teahupoo & more...

Mickey Turns 70

The BIG BUZZ around the surfing community this week is that Mickey "Mongoose" Muñoz is turning 70 years old.

Pictured below is Mickey taken with the Rincon Pit Crew back in 2003 following their victory in the Cleanwater Classic, and another shot with world-class professional longboarder Steve Bigler, fellow Muñoz (Ted), and former pro surfer and big-wave charger Chris Brown.

The word on the street is that there'll be a big shin-dig down at Doheny this Friday to celebrate.  Read a piece by Corky Carroll about Mickey in the OC Register here.  Be sure to check out Steve Bigler's website here too.

More on Wayne Rich...

Everybody knows what a great surfer Wayne is, and that he handcrafts both classic and modern longboards like no other shaper of his generation. But, did you know that Wayne also designs some amazing shortboards?  I spoke with Wayne earlier today, and he told me that in addition to his new molded epoxy designs, you can soon expect to see some new radical hand-shaped shortboard creations in the near future.  Contrary to popular belief, Wayne's surfing background is deeply rooted in shortboards.  You can expect to see that same cutting edge design and unparalleled quality that we have all come to expect from Wayne over the years in all of his new products.  Wayne is no longer associated with Beatty Products.  I'll have a full report on all of that soon, so stay tuned to the blog if you are interested in hearing the full story.

**Note: if you would like to contact Wayne to custom order your next surfboard, just click on the Wayne Rich 'Star' logo on the lefthand sidebar of the Rincon Surf Blog...

Local Towsurfing Team of Akiskalian and Brown Heading to Papeete

Rincon locals Eric Akiskalian and Chris "Brownie" Brown will be flying to Tahiti later this week to take advantage of the swell that has been producing 12' - 15' monster barrels at Teahupoo the past few days.  All forecasts suggest that there will be sufficient swell remaining in the water for the pair to take full advantage of "the gnarliest barrel on the planet".  We wish you guys luck, and look forward to a full report and pictures when you return!

Make Your Prediction: When Will The Official "Season Opener Swell" Hit Rincon?

Will it come early or late?  September, October, or later?  West or North West?  If anyone cares to predict or speculate when they think the first real swell will hit, kindly reply in the "comments" section below using the link at the bottom of this entry.

In case you've forgotten (yeah, right!) what a green Rincon wall looks like, see below.
