Holiday Weekend Update
Significant Southern-Hemi Already Beginning to Show on Buoys
Good morning surfers. Labor day weekend is here, and a new pulse coming in from a New Zealand storm from last week is beginning to register on local buoys. The long-period swell is expected to fill in gradually today, and pump all the way through the holiday weekend...
Scientists studying computer models are reasonably confident that we are heading into a La Niña weather pattern for the upcoming Winter surf season.
• The tropical Pacific is currently in an ENSO-neutral state, but conditions are trending toward La Niña.

іAdios El Niño, Bienvenido La Niña!
Scientists studying computer models are reasonably confident that we are heading into a La Niña weather pattern for the upcoming Winter surf season.
• The tropical Pacific is currently in an ENSO-neutral state, but conditions are trending toward La Niña.
• SST anomalies have become more negative in the eastern equatorial Pacific, and remain slightly positive in the western equatorial Pacific.
• Several dynamical models are predicting the transition to La Niña in the next couple of months, while most statistical models suggest the continuation of ENSO-neutral (i.e. "normal") conditions.
• Recent equatorial Pacific SST observations indicate the possible development of weak La Niña conditions during the next couple of months.
**F.Y.I. The term "ENSO" refers to the phenomenon known as "El Niño Southern Oscillation".
•The last similar SST (sea surface temperature) pattern that we've experienced was registered back in 2000. Do you remember how the waves were back in that season? Please post your comments below, and read more about this development here on the NOAA National Weather Service's Climate Prediction Center website.
Relevant to this discussion is the observation that local water temps have absolutely plunged this past week, leaving Rincon feeling more like mid-Winter than late Summer. Local temperatures have been recorded as low as 58 degrees, the last week before Labor Day. Again a possible harbinger of the arrival of La Niña...
Have a great weekend everybody, be safe, and go get some waves!!
And Now, Your Rincon Wave of the Day for Friday, August 31st.
Not that large, but heavy. The Rivermouth - taken Sunday, February 18th, 2007
