Rincon "Season Opener" This Week?

First Groundswell of the Season Expected Early in the Week

If you haven't logged in to your favorite swell-tracking/surf-forecasting website lately, you are probably not aware that the first 'real' NW swell to hit the point is expected to build early in the week and continue into Friday.  Size is expected to range from shoulder- to head-high, and possibly overhead on the largest sets.  Swell angle is expected to be a bit on the steep side at approximately 300 degrees, and periods will range from between 11 and 13 seconds...  The good news is that the water is still reasonably warm at 63 degrees, so trunking it should not be a problem...

Statement of Purpose: Rincon Surf Blog

It has been brought to my attention recently that there is some confusion over what the purpose of this site is, so I will digress for a brief moment and begin with a definition and a mission statement.

1. Definition of the word "Blog":  Many people are familiar with the word blog, yet have no idea what the etiology is or what the term really means.  Quite simply, the word "Blog" is a contraction -- the combination of the words "web" (as in world-wide web) and "log", hence "blog".  A log is basically a journal with frequent entries, capturing events such as swells over a period of time.  Most websites are "static" (i.e. unchanging).  A programmer writes the code, the site goes up, and stays the same forever.  The beauty of the blog is that it is an ever-growing body of information, pictures, and accounts.  You might find something new every time that you visit as the content is never static.

2. Why a Rincon Surf Blog?  WEBSITE AS A COMMUNITY RESOURCE  The purpose of this site is to chronicle in print and pictures what we all know as locals as "The Rincon Experience", and to provide a portal to other Rincon- and surfing-related websites.  As is the case with anything, there a wide range in the cast of characters that make up the social fabric of this place that we all love to surf.  There are young surfers, old surfers, tall surfers, short surfers, competitive surfers, and soul surfers.  There are longboarders, shortboarders, and occasionally we still see a few of the remnants of the dying breed of kneeboarders.  Most of the regulars are men, but the demographics in terms of gender have changed dramatically over time since I began surfing Rincon in 1974.  There are times when there are more gals in the water than men.  ...Ahhh, and what a beautiful sight they can be...  Whoa!  Some of the surfers at Rincon are really mellow, and keep to themselves....going relatively unnoticed for years and years, while still others can and do make their presence felt ad nauseum.  The purpose of this website is to capture in content EVERYBODY, so that some day we can look back on with our grandchildren and have a resource (read: timecapsule) for sharing what it was like back in the 2000's, possibly back before the sea level rose and ruined the break that was once known as "The Queen of the Coast".

People are going to surf Rincon. It was crowded before the 976 forcast services. It was crowded before on line Surfline stuff. Kind of hard to see how this will change the crowd. If anything, perhaps it will give a better spirit of aloha.

Jon, you have been stellar on this.

Rincon is an amazing place, and the only thing that would make the crowd better is having a mindset like you have in the water.

    Thank you for sharing this!
