RINCON POINT, Calif. — Septic tanks or sewers? The question of how to treat wastewater in this exclusive beachfront community is pitting neighbors, surfers and environmentalists against one another.
Surfers have long complained about getting sick at the world-class surf break here that straddles Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties. And blame for the pollution has long been laid on the septic tanks of the multimillion-dollar homes in the gated enclave of Rincon Point.
After nine years of debate and several lawsuits, homeowners are to vote next month on whether to convert from the tanks to a sewer system. While most residents appear to back the conversion, a vocal group of residents is questioning its wisdom, with several saying they feel bullied into paying for an expensive system that would only encourage more development and more pollution...

Ready for Still Yet Another Controversy at Rincon Point?
The Winter surf season hasn't even begun yet, and already emotions are running high on the beach and in the water. I am going to remain totally neutral on this one, but I couldn't help but overhear some grumbling in the lineup the other day when there were no less than 4 paddleboarders competing with surfers for waves...

Tell the "Sweepers" to get out of the way!
Having seen the growth of this sport over the Summer, I'm dreading the potential number of "Sweepers" out at any one time this season. It's gonna get Ugly...
I had similiar questions the other day in Newport. The presence of only one stand-up created resentment and the ease with which he caught waves was frustrating to all who ccompete for each wave. I pictured a dozen such boards jostling for position on our sand-bar peaks. Not a pretty picture
I have an SUP, am a sweeper, and absolutely love it. That being said I do have less than a years experience and limit myself to empty beach breaks when riding waves. Just simply to big of a board to surf in a crowd. I mainly use it for long paddles on small days, but to go and just stand out in the line-up with surfers is just plain rude. Take a wave and move on down the beach. I have a huge paddle and board no need to stand around out there when I can keep paddling between lulls. I'm starting to feel embarrassed about doing it mainly because of the way some of my fellow sweepers wave hog. You can catch any wave you want, so go catch an empty one down the beach.
First it was short boarders against long then leash vs. no leash then paddlers vs. tow now stand up paddlers vs. prone paddlers ... always some one unhappy with others which is what led me to leave the surf that I loved more than anything...it seems surfers are like the asshole on Pennsylvania ave. there own worse enemy...live and let live selfish bastards !!!
Pay back time for the long boarders in the cove....
I SUP all of the time. What else is there to do around here in the summer? These boards are just too long and with the added hazard of the paddle they do not belong in a crowded area. They open up all kinds of wave riding possibilities that normally would be over looked. I for one will not be SUP surfing Rincon when it is good. The wave deserves to be ridden and to just cruise on a longer than longboard is a waste. Like most things I think this will work itself out. It will take one or two idiots getting dragged behind the twelve footer waving the broom having everyone yell at them and then it will subside.
It's like a food chain bodyboarders upset at shortboarders upset at longboarders upset at paddleboarders kayakers upset at jetskis etc. I say eliminate all vehicles and just bodysurf nude for ultimate waveriding purity, coed of course and it will be like Eden.
I have read in a SUP mag that they want to make it clear SUP need to stay away from breaks where guys/girls are surfing or relegate to the end of the line and don't back paddle ANYONE. Even a sponger. It's just like a kyak. Jonesy's got it right. It's a fun workout on small days but leave it at that unless you are Laird. Greg. Don't let others piss you off and leave surfin, like they say if you use to surf you never did.
These guys are f---ing kooks and should be nowhere NEAR Rincon or any place else that is occupied with normal surfers. I don't understand how SUP idiots feel they can invade the lineup with their silly choice of equipment and expect others to be stoked. I get irritated at just the sight of SUP. I surf Rincon almost every day of the week; let's hope SUP doesn't infiltrate our spot any more than it has. We've already seen the problems from that at other spots like Cardiff Reef, Steamer Lane, etc. At any rate, SUP is just a stupid fad and I'm sure it'll pass with time.
Stand up surfing is for people that cant stand up on a normal wave or just catch a wave. I dont see how people enjoy catching a wave on a boat sounds real fun. ps might as well get a 2hp for those logs
Rincon Kooks,
Get over yourself. Riding a wave is riding a wave. That is the problem with CA there are to many idiots in the water that think they are cooler than the next person. Go to Hawaii and start mouthing off to 300 pound local that body boards and you will see what happeneds. Next time you see SUP in your area maybe you want to paddle up to him or her and see if they want to trade boards for a couple of waves. Embrace change and embrace your fellow waterman or waterwoman. If you can't be positive in the water than stop surfing.
Hey! Thats me on the left! haha
