Parking Fees Proposed for Rincon, "Out There" & More...

Board of Supervisors Propose Parking Fees @ Rincon

Free Rides at The 'Con may be endangered...

According to Surfrider Santa Barbara's Scott Bull, Santa Barbara County Supervisors are working on a plan to charge parking fees at all beaches and parks (including Rincon) in a long list of revenue items.  "It’s outrageous that they even consider using the parks as a County fund-raiser to balance their budget!  So now, unless we act strongly and quickly, these parking fees will become a permanent income stream to the County, from us. Once in place, we will have to pay to enter our own public spaces, forever into the future!"  Bull encourages everyone to contact all five Santa Barbara County Supervisors immediately and tell them to keep our parks free for the community!

Following a hugely successful live auction led by Surfrider Santa Barbara's Matt Wallace, the main event - the screening of the film "Out There" had the sold out crowd of surfers hooting and hollering in their seats while watching the likes of John John Florence, Jamie Sterling, Pancho Sullivan, Jordy Smith, Jamie O’Brien, Nate Yeomans, Brett Simpson, Greg Long, Garrett McNamara, Herbie Fletcher, Torrey Meister, Sterling Spencer and Donavan Frankenreiter all shredding, and ending with the Billabong XXL winning session Shane Dorian, Ian Walsh and Manoa Drollet surfed during what may be the largest waves ever ridden at Tahiti’s famed break, Teahupoo.

Created in partnership with Surfrider Foundation, Out There showcased today’s most progressive surfing, while considering humankind’s impact on the world’s oceans, beaches and waves.  Through the experiences of surfers and the locals they met throughout their travel, the film took a thought-provoking look into the environmental destruction threatening known and unknown surf spots. Out There also questioned impending threats to Trestles in Southern California, pulp mill pollution in Southern Chile, and unrestricted development along Hawaii’s famed North Shore and in Tahiti.

After the film a V.I.P. afterparty hosted by SoBe Life Water, p.i.n.k. Vodka, and New Belgium Brewing, featuring live music by local favorites Spencer, Sam & Scott, took place in the Lobero courtyard behind the theatre.  By all accounts the event was a smashing success for everyone who came.  Kudos to Scott Bull, Matt Wallace of the local Surfrider Foundation chapter, and also to all of the other sponsors and donors who made the evening the standout event of the season...
