Rincon Sewer Battle Apparently Over?

Ric Kinnan drops into S. Ventura County set wave earlier this week

Battle for Clean Water at Rincon Appears to be Finally Over at Rincon

As reported this past week in the Santa Barbara News-Press:

"Both sides in the 10-year fight over the so-called South Coast Beach Communities septic-to-sewer project have agreed to set aside their differences and let the sewer project for Rincon, Sandyland, Sand Point and Padaro Lane move forward.

In a joint statement released Friday, the parties say the agreement was reached a day earlier at the Ventura County Courthouse during day six of a hearing into a challenge brought by some Rincon residents over the annexation election of the Rincon and its neighboring communities into the Carpinteria Sanitary District, according to the statement.

All parties have agreed to respect the assessment vote of October 16, 2007, in which the majority of homeowners of all four communities had voted in favor of assessing their homes to pay for the project."

Ironically enough, just a few days after out-of-towner/outspoken critic of the plan Billy Taylor said, "I've not in any way changed my position about the merits about the project, or more importantly, (Heal the Ocean) is selling the sewer system as a cleaning water project when there is no scientific basis for that. They're making no attempt to try to test whether or not a sewer system will change anything at a place at Rincon," the following report was published in the Ventura County Star:

"Despite water-quality gains at beaches countywide, Rincon Beach in north Ventura County was one of the most polluted in California in 2007, according to a new Natural Resources Defense Council report.

Water tested at the picturesque surf spot repeatedly failed to meet national minimum public health standards, joining repeat offenders Avalon on Santa Catalina Island and the Santa Monica Pier area as having the highest levels of fecal bacteria.

Of 50 weekly tests at Rincon Beach in 2007, bacteria levels exceeded minimum health standards 38 percent of the time. The frequency ranks it probably as one of the worst 100 public beaches in the country, said Nancy Stoner, director of the council's clean water project."

Shaun Tomson's "Bustin Down the Door" Opens on West Coast Today

Shaun's excellent documentary "Bustin' Down the Door" opens today on the West Coast, and how it fares this weekend at the box office will determine its fate; if the results are good, then theatre owners will book the film nationwide...  I know most of you saw the film several months ago at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, but I encourage you to take your family and friends to go see it again.  This coming Monday, Shaun will be at the 7pm screening at the Fiesta 5 Theater in Santa Barbara to talk about the film.  Don't miss this rare opportunity!

Most disappointing, I hope that they continue to test the water at the Rincon after the sewer has gone in. I also hope that someone follows the money that the sewer company will pay Hillary's psuedo eco group Heal the Ocean. It is scientific fact that septic tanks can be very safe and eco-friendly, while all sewers near the coast dump out into the ocean.
